About the Role
My client is investing in scalable utility-scale solutions that strengthen grid stability and accelerate decarbonisation. They are looking for a System Design Engineer BESS, to sit at the heart of their mission: shaping early-stage technical design for large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems across Europe, turning standards into buildable concepts, and ensuring designs are safe, consistent, and permit-ready.

The opportunity:

This is a high-impact design role focused on the front-end technical definition of BESS projects - where the biggest decisions get made. You’ll influence quality, cost, constructability, compliance, and delivery outcomes before projects hit procurement and construction.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead early-stage technical design for utility-scale BESS projects across Europe
  • Create/review key engineering outputs (e.g., single-line diagrams, mechanical layouts, authority-facing technical descriptions)
  • Coordinate and quality-assure external engineering partners across multiple jurisdictions
  • Optimise concepts for safety, compliance, cost, and constructability, enabling standardised delivery
  • Prepare permit-ready documentation and support grid/authority interactions
  • Align scope, risks, assumptions, and timelines with developers, engineering, and management
  • Build a “technology hub” approach: capture lessons learned; standardise templates/specs/workflows
  • Support handover into procurement/construction with ongoing technical input
Must-have skills and level of experience:
  • Degree in Electrical / Mechanical / Energy Engineering (or equivalent technical engineering background)
  • Strong, hands-on understanding of BESS technology and early design trade-offs (tech vs. cost vs. schedule vs. permitting)
  • Proven ability to manage/assure quality of external engineering in multi-country environments
  • Structured documentation habits; proactive, independent working style
  • Fluent English and strong stakeholder communication skills and German at B2 level or higher
